Through a Kaleidoscope

A reflection

I look back at life
and see stories never seen before
like beautiful patterns in a kaleidoscope
made of colourful pieces
of experience
like scattered leaves and petals
gathered from everyday life

And a blessing

may you look back at life
and see stories never seen before
like beautiful patterns in a kaleidoscope

made of colourful pieces
of experience

may you be open and be present
for those moments that find you

and gather them
like leaves, petals and jewel beetle wings
from everyday life

These two poems were born out of my reflection over moments and experiences in my life. Moments that seem distant and scattered before stumbling upon them. Like I would have driven a whole hundred miles, and done a lot of things through the day in bahulavana, before sitting down on the peace rock and experiencing a beutiful sunset. Like finding a specimen of Memecylon lushingtonii in bloom and fruit one day in Horsley Hills, totally unplanned, and then that takes me back to the hills many more times. Like finding an ant micking cricket while sipping a cup of tea with a colegue.

My reflection is about how all the mundane things are edited away in memory and how a story comes back to mind studded by the moments, in their recollection. And how story becomes the vehicle for recollection of these moments, a story slightly different and new, with some details added and some removed, each time it is told, taking its own form everytime, depending on when, where and to whom it is narrated. And this is like seeing a beutiful new pattern in a kaleidoscope, made out of the same pieces.

While my first poem is a reflection, the second one is like a prayer and a blessing that this may keep happening and that we may find moments and their stories, while living our life and looking back at it.
